Joint Master's Programme Political Science – Integration & Governance

General Information

The PoSIG curriculum comprises five modules, of which students are required to select two. The modules are as follows:

  • Political Theory
  • Comparative Politics
  • Public Policy & Administration
  • International Relations
  • European Integration

A comprehensive overview of each module is provided in the addendum to the PoSIG Curriculum (25 April 2023).

A brief overview of the five modules offered by the PoSIG programme is provided below

1. Political Theory

In this module, students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of contemporary and historical normative debates on legitimacy, power and democracy. Empirical political theories concerning power, democracy and contemporary political movements are presented. The module provides students with specific knowledge on critical approaches of modern political ideology. The module encompasses the study of contemporary and historical normative political theories from diverse perspectives. The assessment of teaching and learning objectives is conducted through continuous evaluation, encompassing both written and oral assignments. The module is comprised of 3 courses, each contributing 6 ECTS credits.

2. Comparative Politics

This module is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of political institutions, actors, and decision-making processes across different contexts. It offers a critical examination of theories and debates surrounding the study of comparative political systems, processes, and interactions across various levels, with a particular focus on the Southeast European region. The module's approach is holistic, with all courses continuously assessing student performance. The evaluation of teaching and learning objectives is multifaceted, encompassing written and oral assignments. The module is comprised of 3 courses, each contributing 6 ECTS credits.

3. Public Policy & Administration

The module on Public Policy & Administration focuses on political and administrative institutions, political and administrative actors, and decision-making processes. It enables students to gain in-depth knowledge of the specific theories and theoretical debates concerning public policy and administrative systems in national and supranational perspectives, combined with practical knowledge of public policy and administrative processes in comparative perspectives.The module provides students with a detailed understanding of research, analytical methods, and theories in the thematic areas of public policy and public administration. The module's teaching and learning objectives are assessed through a combination of written and oral assignments. The module is comprised of 3 courses, each contributing 6 ECTS credits.

4. International Relations

In this module, students are introduced to the theoretical underpinnings of international relations, with a particular focus on the functioning of international organisations and the dynamics of international trade flows. The module places significant emphasis on the evaluation of existing theories through critical analysis, empowering students to engage with a range of intellectual frameworks.The assessment strategy for this module is designed to ensure the continuous evaluation of student performance across all course components. Specifically, students are evaluated on their achievement of teaching and learning objectives through written and oral assignments.The module's content is meticulously structured to cover a comprehensive selection of prominent theories in the field of international relations. The module is comprised of 3 courses, each contributing 6 ECTS credits.

5. European Integration

The European Integration module is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the institutions, actors, decision-making processes, policy fields and norms of the European Union, including the functioning of the European multilevel system. Students are encouraged to engage with specific theories and theoretical debates concerning European integration, political processes and interactions across different levels. The module aims to foster the ability of students to analyse these theories critically and apply them to new political developments. By the conclusion of the course, students will have cultivated the capacity to comprehend contemporary research and academic discourse within the domain of European integration, and to transfer their knowledge to other thematic domains. The achievement of teaching and learning objectives is assessed through written and/or oral assignments on a continuous basis. The module is comprised of 3 courses, each contributing 6 ECTS credits.
